Atonement
by Mark Driscoll
Text: 1 Corinthians 15:3
Topic: Why Christians celebrate Jesus' death on the cross
Big Idea: Jesus' death on the cross provided our only path to salvation.

Introduction:
  • Jesus led a relatively simple life, yet he is the most important man that ever lived.
  • Perhaps the most curious thing about Jesus' legacy is the symbol that represents his life and death—that being the cross.
  • Crucifixion was a horrendously painful and humiliating way to die.
Transition: Perhaps most peculiar about the cross and death of Jesus is the fact that Christians declare it to be good news.
Jesus' death on the cross is good news for us.
  • Many people do not see anything positive or beautiful about the Cross.
-Illustration: Gandhi said: "Jesus' death on the cross was a great example to the world, but that there was anything like a mysterious or a miraculous virtue in it, my heart could not accept."
  • To understand why it is good news, we must move from the historical facts to the theological understanding and interpretation of those facts.
    - 1 Corinthians 15:3; Hebrews 9:22
  • Jesus' atonement for our sin was rooted in the Day of Atonement from the Old Testament.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:21
  • The death of Jesus is literally the crux of human history and the crux of our faith.
Jesus' death on the cross was a horrible experience.
  • After the Passover, Jesus was betrayed, arrested, and run through a series of illegal mock-trials.
  • Jesus was beaten and scourged until he was a bloodied, unrecognizable man.
  • When Jesus was nailed to the cross, he was in the process of dying.
  • Jesus' first three statements from the cross were selfless: he thought of sinners that needed to be forgiven, the thief that needed to be saved, and his mother whose heart was broken.
  • Jesus' fourth statement reveals that he physically felt what we would have felt, because he was our substitute.
  • Jesus' fifth statement announced the point when Jesus took on our sin and died spiritually.
    - Isaiah 53:6; Galatians 3:13
  • Jesus final two statements reveal his triumph and reconciliation with the Father.
  • John 10:10
Jesus' death on the cross is our only path to salvation.
  • Driscoll admits that he is concerned for those in the congregation who don't know and love Jesus.
  • Some of us have chosen to believe a fairytale—that we can get to heaven without the Cross.
  • When you look at the cross of Christ, you realize two things: either he died for you, or you will suffer like that.
Conclusion
  • Your sins are real. God's wrath is real. Hell is real. And so is the forgiveness of sin through the Lord Jesus Christ alone.
