The Liberty of Obedience to God
by Elisabeth Elliot
Text: James 1:25
Topic: Why obedience to God is the only path to true freedom.
Big Idea: We often think that freedom means doing whatever we want, when we want. But true freedom comes from only one place: Obeying the Lord.
Keywords: Freedom; Joy; Obedience

Introduction: What holds up the St. Louis Arch

  • -Illustration: Elliot describes the construction of the great arch in St. Louis, noting that it wouldn't be able to stand if it weren't built on a solid foundation and solid principles. The same goes for us.
  • James 1:25 brings together three great words: law, freedom and happiness.
    • Sailboats are free to skim because they obey the laws of the wind and water.
    • The world says freedom is doing what you want, and when you want it.
-Illustration: Elliot tells of a mom whose son announced that one Saturday was a "free day," where he could do whatever he wanted, and not do whatever he didn't want. His mom didn't fix him breakfast because she "didn't want" to, and his little brother borrowed his bike without permission because he wanted it. The older brother got the point: "free days" don't work.
    • Jesus said only obedience and the truth would set us free (John 8:31-32).
    • We all seek happiness; Jesus says we find it by losing ourselves (John 12:24-25).
We find the liberty of obedience through desire, dependence, decision.
    • Desire was illustrated by Paul: "All I care is to know Christ" (Philippians 3:10).
-Illustration: Elliot remembers her first husband, Jim Elliot, as a leader on his college campus. Before they were dating, he signed her yearbook with 2 Timothy 2:4, which says a soldier "must be wholly at his commanding officer's disposal." That was precisely Jim's desire as he served his "Commanding Officer."
    • Dependence means that as Christians, we acknowledge that we need a Savior. Moses asked, "Who am I?" But what mattered was who God was.
-Illustration: Jim Elliot, who graduated from college with highest honors, had to become a "bumbling idiot" among the Quechua people in order to reach them.
    • Decision means we must do what God asks us to do, even when it's difficult.
