Building on the Right Foundation
by Tony Evans
Text: Matthew 7:24–27
Topic: Why life’s foundation is most important
Big Idea: Only the storm reveals the nature of your foundation.
Keywords: Adversity; Difficulty; Word of God

Introduction:
  • The story of two men building houses concludes one of history’s greatest sermons.
The two men shared the same vision.
  • They wanted to accomplish the same thing in building a house.
  • All of us want to build a life, a family, a ministry to stand the test of time.
Both men listened to divine truth.

Both men faced the same storm.
  • The words describing the storm are exactly the same.
The two men possessed two different characters.
  • While one man is wise, the other is a moron.
  • To be foolish is not to lack information, but to do nothing with the information received.
The two men had different foundations.
  • Luke 6:48
  • To build on rock takes hard work; to build on sand takes little time.
  • Illustration: The Leaning Tower of Pisa is only good for show.
  • Anything built without the right foundation is merely a tourist attraction.
The two men experienced different results.
  • Only storms reveal the nature of your foundation.
Our foundation must be formed before the storms come.
  • In Mark 4, Jesus sleeps on a cushion during the storm, meaning his nap was planned. Before leaving, Jesus had promised they would get to the other side.
  • Storms have a way of causing us to forget the truth of God.
  • God gives us storms to reveal what kind of foundation we are on.
  • Illustration: On a cruise, the Evans experienced a violent storm. The captain assures them the boat was built with such a storm in mind.
  • In Christ, the storm may be bad, but our boat is better.
  • The right foundation is built by applying the truth of God to the realities of life.
Conclusion:
  • Illustration: The foundation weight on a balloon-boxing bag determines where the bag winds up no matter what happens to it.
