by Howard Hendricks
Text: 2 Timothy 2:15
Topic: How to evaluate the spiritual quality of your leadership.
Big Idea: A good leader must be faithful to the Lord, the work, and the Word.
Keywords: Leadership; Faithfulness; Excellence; Truth
Introduction:
- The crisis of leadership is a crisis of character.
- Illustration/ Quote: Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn: "All the celebrated technological achievements of progress, including the conquest of outer space, do not redeem the twentieth century's moral poverty."
- What type of leader makes a permanent impact?
- Illustration: The seal of the Moody Bible Institute references 2 Timothy 2:15--: "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth."
- Illustration/ Quote: Aristotle: "Like archers, we shall stand a far greater chance of hitting the target if we can see it."
- Here are three questions that you can ask to evaluate the spiritual quality of your leadership.
Is the Lord well-pleased?
- God found pleasure in the Son because the Son found pleasure in doing the Father's will.
- God is calling you not to be flattered but to be faithful.
- Don't believe your press reports, for it is God who gives the final approval.
Is the work well-done?
- This calls for a passion for excellence.
- Illustration: Bertoldo smashes a work of his student Michelangelo because he was fooling around: "Michelangelo, talent is cheap; dedication is costly."
- Paul says "a workman does not need to be ashamed." Why?
- We are ashamed if we aim too low or it's costing too little.
- Illustration: As David said to Araunah, "I will not offer unto the Lord my God that which costs me nothing."
- Illustration/ Quote: One of Eugene O'Neill's characters: "You cannot build a marble temple out of a mixture of mud and manure."
Is the Word well-used?
- This involves a passion for truth.
- Illustration/ Quote: Ayn Rand: "Honesty is adherence to truth and truth is the discovery of reality."
- This calls for living the truth.
- It also means a call to communicate the truth.
- Illustration: Moody Bible Institute has been a pacesetter in this through its schools, literature, and radio broadcasts.
Conclusion
- The three greatest days in a person's life are the day they were born, the day they were born again, and the day when they come to grips with why they were born and born again.
- May you have a positive answer to these three questions.
