When Religion Becomes Serious Business
by Gordon MacDonald
Text: Titus 3:3-5
Topic: What a seeker looks like.
Big Idea: The journey of a seeker is characterized by self-realization and metamorphosis.
Keywords: Direction; Seekers; Seeking God
Introduction
- People are confident of where they stand until something goes wrong.
What is a seeker?
- He asks hard questions, and if they get answers, they make a commitment.
- He often experiences a crisis that makes them realize they're not in control.
- He is awake to new sensitivities, looking for insights into following Christ.
The seeking process involves rebirth and renewal.
- The Apostle Paul saw foolishness and self-deception under all his religiosity.
- Paul was regenerated by the Spirit prior to his conversion.
- Illustration: MacDonald was talking on a wireless phone to his daughter when the battery went dead; similarly, if our souls have dead batteries, we can't communicate with God.
C. S. Lewis was a good example of a seeker.
- The autobiographical Surprised by Joy recounts his move from atheism to faith.
- As Lewis read more about Christ, he came alive and discovered that his old system of faith was inadequate.
The Scriptures give us examples of kinds of seekers.
- "Generic seeker": Nicodemus (John 3) was attracted to Christ's lifestyle.
- "Convicted seeker": the woman at the well (John 4) was attracted to his love.
- "Yearning seeker": Cornelius (Acts 10) had a hungry heart.
- "Unhinged seeker": the jailer (Acts 16) was suicidal before he asked for salvation.
Conclusion
- Do you really know where you are, and where you have to go?
