Easter in an Age of Terror
by Steve May
Text: Matthew 28:1-10
Topic: How to live the significance of Easter in our daily lives
Big Idea: The defining moment of our lives is Easter Sunday—the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Keywords: Fear; Trust; Great Commission; Surrender; Easter;

Introduction:
  • Illustration: May references the country song, “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?” to illustrate how the 9-11 attacks didn’t stop the world, only changed it before continuing on.
  • Even though the world has changed, Easter hasn’t.
  • The events of Easter morning render powerless war and death and sickness and pain and sorrow and despair and heart break and loneliness and sin and every other awful thing that has plagued humanity throughout creation.
  • Matthew 28:5-7, 10
  • Big Idea: The defining moment of our lives is Easter Sunday—the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Stand up to your fears.
  • Matthew 28:10
  • The worst effect fear has on us is that is paralyzes us.
  • Fear is a choice to which Jesus says, “Do not think fearfully; do not act fearfully.”
  • Matthew 28:20
  • Because of the resurrection we don’t have to live in fear.
Focus on your mission.
  • Matthew 28:10
  • The world needs to hear that Jesus Christ is Lord, and he has power over sin and death.
  • Matthew 28:19-20
  • Mark 16:15
  • Luke 24:47
  • John 20:21
  • Illustration: May illustrates the idea that the gospel compels us to tell the world by quoting a joke from Reader’s Digest about a boy who won’t be bribed to keep quiet when his brother breaks a window…because more than anything, he wants to tell.
  • The best solution to terrorism is to introduce every tribe, every nation, and every soul on the planet to the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Illustration: May quotes Abraham Lincoln: “I destroy my enemy when I make him my friend.”
  • Our mission—as a church and as individuals—is more important now than it ever was before.
Rely on his promises.
  • Matthew 28:10
  • Illustration: May tells the extensive story of a worship team that repeated the phrase “If God shows up,” while May insisted that God has promised to show up in the praises of his people.
  • Our hope is in the power of Jesus Christ to change lives.
  • This is our promise: Give your life to Jesus Christ, and he will turn it around.
  • Without the promises of Jesus, the church doesn’t have much to offer the world—if anything at all.
  • As we face uncertain times, our only hope is to put our hope only in him.
Conclusion:
  • Even though the world has changed, Easter hasn’t.
