A Halftime Talk
by Steve May
Text: Acts 1
Topic: : How to make a fresh start
Big Idea: No matter where you are in your life right now, God can turn things around.
Keywords: Change; Redemption; Renewal; Spiritual growth; Hope
Introduction:
- Illustration: May begins by telling of how he watched a great NFL comeback game with his boys, telling them, “No matter how beaten you may believe yourself to be, don’t quit. There’s always a chance for a comeback.”
- The Apostle Peter also experienced a great comeback in the second half of his life.
- Regardless of your age, and regardless of your situation, you can declare that it is halftime.
- Get prepared to go back on the field, playing a new game a new way in the second half.
Forgive.
- If you have long struggled with failure and defeat and you are ready to turn things around—you have to experience and receive and accept God’s forgiveness.
- God’s forgiveness is already there.
- Accepting God’s forgiveness is a huge obstacle in many people’s ability to get on with their lives.
- You can experience freedom from the power of the past through the power of God’s forgiveness.
- Mark 16:6-7
- In order to experience a comeback you have to let go of something that those who lose often hold near and dear: BLAME.
- At every moment God is calling you to turn your back on yesterday and start living for him today.
Use teamwork.
- Illustration: May quotes Andrew Carnegie: “It marks a big step in man’s development when he comes to realize that other men can be called in to help him do a better job than he can do alone.”
- Acts 1:21-22, 23-26
- Peter knew that it was time to begin the second half, that they had a tremendous task ahead of them, and that they needed every position filled.
- Look at your own team. Who’s on your side? Who can help you stage a comeback?
- Illustration: May illustrates the necessity of teamwork by pointing out that John Elway, a quarterback famous for comebacks, couldn’t win a Super Bowl until he had a great coach and running back on his team.
Tap into power.
- Acts 1:4-5, 8
- God will give you the power to do it.
- Here’s the principle behind making a comeback: You cannot do it without God, and he will not do it without you.
Conclusion:
- Big Idea: No matter where you are in your life right now, God can turn things around.
- John 10:10
