The Silent Treatment
by Steve May
Text: Psalm 62:5 (NRSV)
Topic: How to meditate in a biblical manner
Big Idea:Spiritual growth requires that you be silent long enough to hear the voice of God.
Keywords: Meditation; Prayer
Introduction:
- Due to the amount of press that Transcendental Meditation received in the sixties, many associate the term “meditation” with Transcendental Meditation.
- Many devout followers of Christ are convinced that meditation is bad and identify meditation with the new age, the occult, or eastern religions.
- Scripture makes it plain that meditation is as normal and practical as prayer, and should be part of our daily lives.
- Biblical meditation can be defined as listening to God.
Meditation necessitates attachment.
- We begin by detaching ourselves from the world; we continue by attaching ourselves to God.
- Due to our busy schedules, we can't escape to the wilderness every time we want to meditate, so we each need to find a secluded place within ourselves where we go to pray and be with God.
- The greatest obstacle to meditation is our inability to say truthfully that we want God alone.
Meditation negates expectation.
- When we meditate, we submit ourselves to God’s timing.
- Meditation moves us beyond simply asking and receiving and leads us into a deeper kind of communion with God that simply basks in his presence.
- When we meditate, we commit ourselves to waiting on God in faith, and resting in his presence.
Meditation requires silence.
- Spiritual growth requires that you be silent long enough to hear the voice of God.
- Many people are uncomfortable with silence.
- When noisy distractions are eliminated, it is easier to think about God.
Conclusion:
- Scripture challenges us to take our prayer life a step further, into intimate communion with God, where we remove all the distractions of the outside world and can hear his voice.
