Introduction:
- A common complaint is that the church talks too much about money.
- Churches do talk a lot about money because churches need money.
- Colossians 4:2
- This is what our church needs more than money: We need a congregation of believers committed to the ministry of prayer.
- Colossians 4:3
- Big Idea: Before we can begin to think about what we want to accomplish as a church, we need to develop a solid foundation of prayer.
Pray that we will have opportunities for ministry.
- Colossians 4:3
- God has called us not only to gather together for worship, but to reach out to others in ministry as well.
- Matthew 16:18
- We can’t do everything that needs to be done, but we can go where God leads.
- Illustration: May tells the story of his former church in San Diego seizing an opportunity that was presented it to minister to homeless people, illustrating how God’s opportunities lead to great and unexpected ministry.
Pray that we will proclaim the message of Christ.
- Colossians 4:4
- The world doesn’t understand the gospel.
- It is our responsibility to proclaim the gospel clearly, in a way they will understand.
- Illustration: May demonstrates how a church must be known for its love through the story of his former church in Oklahoma, where people who didn’t even attend knew to send hurting people to the church because “they accept everybody.”
Pray that we will not let setbacks stand in our way.
- Colossians 4:3
- 2 Corinthians 11:24-28
- No matter how attractive the option of giving up may seem, we must remain faithful.
- Illustration: May tells the story of a youth pastor whose planned summer camp faced practical problems and opposition but who persevered and saw 50 students come to Christ and his youth group grow larger than the adult congregation.
Conclusion:
- We need a core of people committed to prayer.
- With your prayers and with God’s help, we cannot fail.
