Introduction
- Nearly all of us feel prejudiced against snakes.
- Though many types of snakes are actually “good” snakes, the “bad” snakes give the good ones a bad name.
- The worst type of snake is a good snake gone bad.
Why and How to Destroy a Bad Snake
- Hezekiah understood that the kingdom he inherited was full of bad snakes, and he decided to make a difference.
- Three non-negotiables for revival are: removal of sin, return to God’s Word, and renewal of worship.
- Hezekiah took a step necessary for revival – he got rid of sin.
How a Good Snake Becomes a Bad Snake
- Numbers 21:4–9
- The bronze snake of Moses was originally an agent of healing and an emblem of God’s blessing.
- During the time of Solomon, the snake became an object lesson.
- The snake became problematic only when people began worshiping it.
Bad Snakes through the Ages
- Good snakes become bad when they take the place of God.
- The Pharisees made a bad snake of God’s laws.
- The early church made a bad snake of worship traditions.
- The early American church made a bad snake of tradition by opposing the move of God through the Wesleys, Edwards, and Whitefield.
- The church in London made a bad snake of the Sabbath by opposing Raike’s Sunday school movement.
Beware of Bad Snakes Today
- Robinson sees Generation X as the Hezekiahs of today.
- The church must be prepared to address the ever-changing questions and needs of its society.
-Illustration: Robinson relates the story of a Sunday school child who was hesitant to answer, “squirrel,” thinking the answer must be Jesus.
Conclusion
- We must be prepared to kill our old, bad snakes for the sake of the church, our society, and the world.
