When Teens Rebel
by Bob Russell
Text: Proverbs 22:6
Topic: How to parent teens in a biblical way
Big idea: In the wake of Columbine, we need to practice God's principles in parenting.
Keywords: Children; Parenting; Rebellion; Respect; Teenagers

Introduction:
  • Why the rage and brutality in schools?
  • A child's rebellion can be minimized by godly parents and three biblical principles:
Children are inherently sinful.
  • The Bible says humans, including children, are inherently evil (Jer. 17:9, Prov. 22:15, Rom. 7:18).
-Illustration: The Minnesota Crime Commission released a report that said every baby, if permitted to stay in his or her self-centered world, would grow up to be a criminal.
-Illustration: Russell's parents wouldn't allow him, as a teen, to bring a girl to the house when they weren't home. His mom explained why by saying, "That's too much temptation."
Parents must teach respect.
  • Recent years have indicated a breakdown of respect for all authority figures.
  • Children need to learn respect for parents.
-Illustration: Russell suggests a scenario in which a toddler refuses to obey his parents. Immediate punishment for this disobedience is needed to correct the child.
  • Children need to learn respect for civic authority.
  • Children need to learn respect for church leaders.
-Illustration: Youth leaders at Russell's church forbade their teens to bring any secular CDs on a trip to Florida-any found would be "confiscated and destroyed." The first year, they found many and destroyed them. Students never tried to bring them again.
Don't quit parenting early.
  • Parents tend to be very involved in the early years, then "phase out."
  • Parents are responsible for their kids till they're financially independent.
  • Josh McDowell: "Rules without relationship lead to rebellion."
You can reclaim lost ground.
  • What should you do if your teenager is already rebellious? Some steps:
    - Ask God for wisdom; you need divine help.
    - Talk to the child and repent. Admit your mistakes, and say you're sorry.
    - Announce a change of strategy: From now on, you're the leader of the home.
    - Communicate clear guidelines and reasonable consequences to the child.
    - Follow through with consistency and courage.

    - Illustration: Some parents took their rebellious teen to a Christian aunt to protect the girl and the other kids in their home. The aunt was firm, the girl found Christ, and is now active in a church youth group.
Conclusion:
  • Continue to extend gestures of love to rebellious children.
  • Teens should be thankful to have parents who follow these principles.
