The Sacred Romance
by John Eldredge
Text: John 1:1
Topic: What are the stages in the history of the gospel
Big idea: The gospel is an invitation into an ancient and eternal drama of the heart
Keywords: Gospel, Love of God, Postmodernism

Introduction:
  • Postmodernism compels us to retell the story of life and love.
The story begins with the eternal love of the Trinity.
  • Perfect love existed before time amongst the persons of the Trinity.
  • Created in God's image, we try to regain that heroic intimacy.
    - Illustration: Eldredge illustrates the longing for heroic intimacy by reminiscing about life on Grandpa's ranch and his childhood memories of peace and fulfillment when all the old folks gathered around and invited him to share in the ongoing story of life.
God invites angels into the drama.
  • The angels know what it is to stand in awe of the love of God.
  • But Lucifer chooses to challenge that love, and the plot thickens.
God's love is put on trial in the creation of humanity.
  • God demonstrates his love in creation.
  • But mankind rejects this love
  • God demonstrates his grace in the pursuit of mankind.
  • God's love is put the test in the Incarnation.
    - Illustration: Using Kirkegaard's parable of a king who willingly becomes a beggar, Eldredge explains how neither power, nor display of grandeur, nor gifts of wealth, but only the humble Incarnation could prove the worthiness of the love of God.
An eternity of joy and feasting awaits those that accept the invitation.
  • Illustration: Eldredge quotes C.S. Lewis in The Chronicles of Narnia, where it tells of the unspeakable wonder, and the timeless glory, of eternity with the king.
