Introduction
  • Children are a gift from God.

  • Illustration: Whitney Houston’s song “The Greatest Love of All” exalts children.
Our culture idolizes children.
  • One of the warning signs in Isaiah 3 that a nation is about to fall is children being in charge.
  • The book of Proverbs contains several warnings against spoiling children and failing to discipline them, for this leads to disaster.
  • The Scripture exalts the transparency, loyalty and teachability of children, but it decries against foolish, selfish and rebellious childishness.
  • Illustration: Thompson quotes child psychologist Robert Coles on America’s preoccupation with children and the burden this idolatry places on them.
How can we know if we place children too high?
  • Ask yourself if you are letting your children limit your ministry.
  • Ask yourself if your children see your church as your family’s primary community.
  • Ask yourself if you are purchasing any of your children’s lifestyle with the Lord’s portion.
  • Ask yourself if you fear the disapproval of your children more than that of God.
What are the marks of a parent who is putting God first?
  • Parents must love the Lord with all of their hearts, souls, minds, and strength, making him their top priority.
  • Parents must diligently teach their children to live for God.
    - Teach your kids by repeatedly modeling Christlike qualities, and they will imitate you.
    - Teach your kids by faithfully repeating these behaviors; they will see your pattern of consistency, and incorporate these positive patterns into their own lives.
    - Teach your kids by being committed to Christ; they will learn what it is to be committed and follow your lead.
